Starting another new year!

This summer brought many changes to the Barn, as well as the rest of campus.  Nearly all of the dorm parents played musical apartments, so the Barn now has all new dorm parents and a new dorm associate.  Not to worry, though, because both dorm parent families are veteran dorm parents here at CSW!

Tom and Janelle, who were dorm parents in White Farm for the last four years, are now living in Lee and Jordan's old apartment.  Upstairs, Sandy and LeeAnn have come from three years in Trapelo and moved into Melisa and Michael's old apartment.  We also welcome Johára as our new dorm associate.  Our fearless dorm leaders, Rowan and Mingwei, are helping us learn Barn traditions.  It's an exciting new team, and we are all eager to get to know the girls better.

Labor Day weekend has been full of orientation activities for both our new domestic students of color and our new international students.  Right now, the last of our new domestic boarders are arriving and moving in, and by tomorrow night, we will have a full house with everyone back for the start of the new school year.

Stay tuned for updates!

Music Video!

Here is the Orange team's awesome Barn music video:

The green team did one also, but they were a little shy about posting it. =)

It's been busy around here!

It's been a BUSY few weeks here in the Barn!

Let's see where we left off...we had just celebrated some birthdays and half-birthdays and also serenaded the other dorms for Valentine's Day!

Continuing the love theme, our dorm leaders and dorm parents got together and made little handmade valentine bags o' treats for each of the girls:

The dorm leaders snuck around delivering them at night so the girls would find them first thing in the morning!

Then, there was the birthday song to be sung to Paloma:

Then, it was time to start our annual ADVENTURE CHALLENGE. Which is sort of like a scavenger hunt and sort of like the Amazing Race. We split the girls into five teams and gave them a list of challenges to conquer. Here are some of the fun submissions as part of the scavenger hunt:

The purple team found this "face within an inanimate object":
And this was our favorite face found by the green team:
And here's the purple team posing as superheroes:
Here's the purple and green team working together to try to form a human pyramid:
This is the orange team posing with Jane to spell out "I *heart* CSW"

And the Green team getting CSW staff and faculty to spell out "The Barn":

The purple team made this Barn logo:
And the green team made this one:
One of the challenges asked students to spell out CSW from "found letters" around campus. We thought they did an amazing job. Check out this submission from the purple team:
And this one from the green team:
Clever, huh? =)

This is the orange team's barn-related music video!

Anyway, there were sonnets and haikus and riddles and math problems and logic problems. And, in the end, it was NECK AND NECK. I'm talking mere points decided the final winners. The orange team came in third place, the purple team came in second place, and the green team placed first. They're negotiating their prize now...it will likely involve dinner/movies/ice cream or some variation on that theme. They are considering trying to share their prize with the purple team. =)

After THAT was over, it was time for the Open Mic night. Denisha and Briana read awesome poems, Ronghao did some cool magic for us, and Victoria F. and Jordan performed an awesome song.

And after THAT, Shari gave her capstone presentation!
And then Rowan went to France. And came back.

Whoa. Like I said, it's been busy around here!

xoxo

L.O.V.E.

So last weekend, we celebrated Shari and Niko's half birthdays with delicious fruit sorbets, and the birthday song:

This week, in the spirit of Valentine's Day, we surprised each of the other dorms on campus with a surprise love song serenade, accompanied by our amazing musical talent, Jordan! I'm not sure they were all totally surprised, but we'd like to think they were appreciative of our endearingly theatrical performance. Here are some pictures and a video:

Then, we came back to the dorm and had chocolate fondue with THREE kinds of chocolate and lots of delicious dippers: strawberries, apples, rice krispie treats, pizzelles, pound cake, oreos...!

And then, just for good measure, we topped it all off with apple pie to celebrate Kandice's birthday!

Yeah. So we're all really full now.

And also, we can't get that L.O.V.E. song out of our heads....

Sleepovers and Ice Cream

Over mod break, our brilliant dorm leaders organized a sleepover in the common room, with movies and popcorn and general merriment. Before it started, Lee took them to Lizzie's for ice cream!  Here's some photos:

Apples and Nachos

Last weekend, our dorm leaders organized a brilliant game night. We managed to fit about a dozen barnies (and friends) in our tiny kitchen to make delicious nachos before heading to the common room for a rousing (and hilarious) game of Apples to Apples. Which I believe was won by Sarah!

Happy Birthday, Riz!

Last Sunday we celebrated Riz's birthday, with her chosen snack of chocolate-dipped goodies. There were pretzels, strawberries, bananas, and Madeleine cookies to munch on. Excellent choice. Happy Birthday!

Happy Lunar New Year!

The Barn celebrated the Lunar New Year with our annual Red Envelope hunt: Think Easter Egg hunt, but with easier-to-hide red envelopes containing quarters for laundry, candy, and other goodies.

The Dorm Parents go to great lengths to make it challenging. Every nook and cranny is a potential hiding spot!

The Barn, Version 2012

It's time for the annual Yearbook photo once again. Fitting this many Barnies in one photo is a little bit like trying to pack for a 2 week vacation in a small backpack. But, we did it. Looking better than ever, Barnies!

It's not all glam and glitz, however. It turns out the Barn has a silly streak too!

Barn Balloon Bonanza!

The Barn's awesome trio of dorm leaders (Briana, Tilly, and KyoungHee) decided to put together a fun activity for the long weekend: A bunch of tricky questions were stuffed inside balloons, and spread around our common room. Our girls then took turns popping a balloon and addressing the question found inside. Hilarity ensued, we are told. We let the girls have some fun on their own!

Happy Birthday, Ayan and Michael, and Half Birthday for Victoria!

Tonight we celebrated Victoria Z.'s half birthday and Ayan and Michael's birthdays. Here's the video!

Holiday Party

We had so much fun at our holiday secret snowflake reveal that, after cleaning up, one of the girls asked if we could do it all over again. It made the dorm seem even cozier and homier before everyone went off to their other homes over break. Here's a recap slideshow from the fun:
