Then there were the S'mores!!

So after the PADD plays and the nice lists, we went outside to christen our new firepit and make s'mores! mmmmmm.....

We created a monster!!! It's the S'morasaurus!!!

Tuesday

Tuesday was such a special night. First, we did the "nice lists". For those of you that don't know...each girl in the dorm wrote something nice they wanted to say about every other girl in the dorm. (Sometimes it's just kind of awkward to say these things out loud). Then the dorm parents compiled them each into a final collage that each girl got to keep. Here's an example:

It was so nice to hand them out and see how surprised everyone was by what people had to say about them. It was beautiful...it will be one of my favorite memories of this year, just the amazing energy in the room.

Pics from the PADD Performances!

Courtney was in a fabulous piece both written and directed by Juliana, who definitely has a future as a playwright!

Jenny and Juliana were both in this witty work about a family where the robot is more of a parent than the real parents!

Cheyenne was a rapping cat in this piece exploring the conversation that MIGHT happen between two cats on a couch. Cheyenne was very expressive, though after winnie-the-pooh, we're afraid she's getting herself typecast as all these animals!

Best.Night.Ever.

Tonight was so much fun...first the P.A.D.D. plays (Juliana, Cheyenne, Jenny, and Courtney, with lighting by Rada)...then our final super clean (well okay, that wasn't really the fun part, but the girls did a great job)...then handing out the NICE LISTS which made everyone really happy, then senior gifts...and special recognition to Sarah, who isn't a senior but was the only barnie to go a whole year without getting a warning!!!! We also finally gave Alicia and Travis the baby gifts we got them ages ago...and then had s'mores and soda and the Throw Down Ho Down Dance and a bonfire.

What a night. The perfect ending to the year. Tomorrow I'll post pictures, but for now...it's time for sleep!!

'night y'all!

End-of-Year Updates

So Cheyenne had her big show for synchronized swimming this weekend, and we're really bummed we didn't get to see her perform, but we know she did great. It was so much fun to see last year, so hopefully we'll make it next year! (and if we're lucky, maybe she'll share a few pictures with us).

Meanwhile, our seniors are getting ready to move on to the next chapter of their lives. Here's what we know of their plans so far...

  • Blen is attending Cornell (NY)
  • Da Won will be headed to Parsons (NY) --where Project Runway is filmed!
  • Hyeon Jin is headed to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (IL)
  • Jin and Minami will be starting at the Rhode Island School of Design together (RI)
  • Jofia is headed to Regis (and Helen is very glad she'll be nearby)
  • Kanae will be at The School of Visual arts (NY)
  • Katie is deferring for a year to have some really cool adventures of her own
  • and Rada will also be nearby, attending Northeastern.

We're really sad to see them all go, but so proud of all they've accomplished at CSW. We'll be officially saying good-bye as a dorm this week, amid s'mores and gifts, and hopefully more laughter than sadness.

Stay tuned for pictures from the boat dance this weekend! The girls all looked so beautiful!

4 days left....

Minami's Capstone

Minami's capstone was today, and she presented to a full house--I think there must have been 30 people there to listen to her! For her capstone, Minami explored portraiture and interviewed subjects before doing a conceptual portrait conveying their personality. Minami really explained her process very well, and it was amazing to see that the process of doing this--and other art while at CSW--has really changed her in some ways, and pushed her outside of her comfort zone. It gave me goosebumps to hear what a meaningful process this was for her! Unfortunately, there were such crowds around her artwork that I couldn't get pictures!

New Head of Boarding Life

Tonight we had elections for next year's Head of Boarding Life, which also includes being the Boarding Life Town Meeting Moderator. This year, our own Hyeon Jin did a fantastic job with the position (and Rada and Cheyenne were elected to represent the Barn on the boarding life committee). The Boarding Life Committee really works hard to build community, plan events, and address concerns that come up within the boarding community. They have the ability to create policy changes and put them up for a vote within the boarding community, so it's a very influential role to have and a huge honor.

This year we had four candidates for the position...and three were from the Barn! What leadership we have in our dorm! We're very excited to have such good representation from the dorm, and we're also excited that the Barnies showed such thoughtfulness in preparing for the position and giving their speeches, and answering some tough questions from boarding students. Courtney, Briana and Jane put themselves out there in front of the community and showed how much they care about CSW and we were really proud of all three of them. (Leo from Aleph did a great job too!!) Courtney and Briana also get kudos for being brave and showing such initiative after only one year as part of our community...and Jane for wanting to take on an additional leadership role even after being elected to our dorm leader position. They all did a great job and it was a good experience for them to have. They all seem destined for leadership roles at CSW. Congrats to all of you for your courage and investment in our community!

When the votes were tallied, Jane was elected to be the new Head of Boarding Life, and we are so excited for her! We know you'll do a terrific job, Jane!

Minami in Shakespeare Ensemble

Shakespeare Ensemble is a much-anticipated 7th mod class each year. The students focus on character development, timing, expression, and, of course, Shakespeare. The course culminates in a production. This year, it was "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and Minami was a beautiful fairy, doing Puck's bidding. It was a truly wonderful performance by all, with sincere acting and a light-hearted approach. As in all things at CSW, the students put their own (80's) twist on the show. =)

Oh, and at the end of tonight's show, all of the seniors--Minami, included--received roses from the cast. A beautiful end to a beautiful night!
